Gio “The American Dream” Reyna Tee
In an election year that has America more divided than ever, rising young soccer star Gio Reyna might be one of the few people that can unite the country. Earlier this year, Gio burst on the world scene with a strong debut season for Borussia Dortmund of the German Bundesliga and, at just 17 years old, the young American has already displayed skills and potential that are exciting everyone.
During his debut season at Borussia Dortmund, teammate Erling Haaland jokingly called Gio “The American Dream” for his promising playmaking ability. This season, the pair’s attacking partnership has picked back up right where it left off, prompting Haaland to double down on Gio’s new nickname. Used in post-game interviews and on social media, the nickname has caught on with attentive fans and major media outlets.
As Election Day 2020 approaches, we felt that the nickname had a political ring to it and decided to create tees and campaign signs declaring 2020 as the year of Gio Reyna. The shirt’s logo design is a spin-off of the “2000 Gore-Liberman” campaign logo, with the original “G” and shooting star matching up perfectly with Gio’s name and rising profile. For an authentic political campaign feeling, we scatter twenty of our Gio “The American Dream” Reyna campaign signs across the city of Washington, D.C.
The visual theme of the lookbook highlights the logo design’s link between sports and politics, in particular their shared ability to unite, as well as divide, groups of people. In keeping with the theme of sports and politics, we shot at landmarks in both sports and politics, visiting RFK Stadium, the U.S. Capitol, Audi Field, and D.C.’s local government. The lookbook’s aesthetic is also inspired by campaign photography, as it captures our model in a mix of staged and candid shots, mimicking those of a would-be political candidate.
